When children are first learning to count, they have a general notion about pointing while they say the counting sequence, "One, two, three, four, five..." and they imitate the counting behavior they have observed. At first they aren't too concerned about making sure each object is counted once and only once. Children learn what counting is all about when they consistently practice counting each object once and only once.
