There are many different benefits of poetry. It can be a great phonics tool, it is enjoyable for all ages, and is an excellent introduction to many different kinds of literature. Each month we read and recite at least one new poem. These poems have been chosen specifically to build vocabulary and comprehension skills. They help us recognize rhyming words and words that start with the same beginning sound. Focusing on one poem for the month allows us to reinforce many different literacy skills. Plus, it is just plain fun!
