Even though four-year-olds may not develop a full awareness of the print on each page of a book, they are cued by the pictures and are enjoying the pattern of the story. These positive experiences with books helps students to internalize early reading behaviors and establish a love of reading. Our big book The Doorbell Rang inspired some fun filled activities revolving around cookies.
First, we completed a cookie book to help us learn our friends' names. We read it aloud and giggled at our portraits. It made its way to the book nook where many of our students have read and reread it. To complete the activity, we had a cookie taste off where we organized, compared, and graphed the results. After graphing our cookie taste off, we illustrated a book called Yummy Cookies, which we immediately snuggled up and read.
